‘‘Plant-based milk is cruelty-free, cholesterol-free, and environmentally sustainable. It offers comparable nutrients without the hormones, antibiotics, or animal suffering in raw milk. With endless flavor options, it's a kinder, healthier choice for people and the planet. Why choose harm when plants provide all we need?’’
In recent years, the debate between traditional animal-derived milk and plant-based alternatives has gained momentum, driven by ethical, environmental, and health concerns. Among the traditional options, raw milk has sparked a particularly heated discussion. Advocates tout its supposed health benefits, but a closer look reveals significant risks. Meanwhile, plant-based milk continues to emerge as a safer, more sustainable, and compassionate choice for consumers.
Raw Milk: The Controversial Choice
Raw milk, unpasteurized and unprocessed, has its proponents who claim it offers superior nutrients and a more natural alternative to pasteurized milk. However, recent news stories highlight its dangers and the growing concern among public health experts.
In November 2023, an outbreak of bacterial infections linked to raw milk consumption made headlines across the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported cases of E. coli and Campylobacter infections traced back to a farm selling raw milk without adequate testing. Hospitalizations, particularly among children, reignited the debate about whether raw milk should even be legal. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have long warned against raw milk consumption due to the risks of harmful pathogens, including Salmonella and Listeria.
Adding fuel to the controversy, a story emerged in 2017 about a raw milk company CEO, Mark McAfee, advising the incoming Trump administration on food policy. McAfee, a vocal raw milk advocate, pushed for deregulation, arguing that small farms producing raw milk faced undue government scrutiny. Critics raised concerns about prioritizing corporate interests over public health. More recently, a 2024 exposé by Plant Based News revisited this story, highlighting the implications of such policy advice and the potential public health risks it could exacerbate. These stories remind us that raw milk, though glamorized by some as a return to natural living, poses significant risks.
The Case for Plant-Based Milk
In contrast to raw milk and other animal-derived milks, plant-based milk offers numerous advantages for individuals and the planet. Let’s examine these benefits across three key areas: health, ethics, and the environment.
Health Benefits of Plant-Based Milk
Plant-based milk is free of cholesterol, low in saturated fat, and often fortified with essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and B12. Unlike raw milk, plant-based milk eliminates the risk of harmful pathogens because it is pasteurized during production.
For the 68% of the global population who are lactose intolerant, plant-based options such as almond, oat, soy, and coconut milk provide digestible alternatives. These milks also cater to people with specific dietary restrictions, such as allergies or the need to reduce saturated fat intake due to heart disease or high cholesterol.
Scientific studies continue to validate the health benefits of plant-based diets, including plant-based milk. A 2023 review in The Journal of Nutrition found that consuming plant-based alternatives reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, further strengthening the argument for choosing these products over dairy.
Ethical Advantages
Ethically, plant-based milk stands in stark contrast to animal milk. Traditional dairy production involves practices that many consumers find distressing, such as separating calves from their mothers, forced impregnation, and eventually slaughtering animals when their milk production declines. These practices are inherent to both pasteurized and raw milk production.
Plant-based milk, by comparison, eliminates animal suffering. No animals are harmed in cultivating oats, almonds, soybeans, or other plant sources. As consumers become more aware of the ethical implications of their choices, plant-based milk offers a clear path to align their dietary habits with their values.
Environmental Impact
The environmental case for plant-based milk is perhaps the most compelling. Producing dairy milk is resource-intensive, requiring large quantities of water, feed, and land. Additionally, dairy farming generates significant greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane from cows.
A comprehensive 2018 study published in Science quantified the environmental benefits of plant-based milk. Almond milk uses approximately one-third the water of dairy milk, while soy and oat milk require even less. All plant-based milks have a far lower carbon footprint, with greenhouse gas emissions several times lower than those of dairy milk.
The Broader Context: Consumer Trends and Challenges
Consumer preferences are shifting. According to a 2023 market report by the Good Food Institute, plant-based milk now accounts for over 15% of milk sales in the United States, with oat milk leading the surge. This growth reflects increasing consumer awareness of health, environmental, and ethical considerations.
However, challenges remain. The dairy industry continues to lobby against plant-based milk, often pushing for legislation that restricts the use of the term “milk” on plant-based products. Despite these efforts, consumers are not deterred. Many see through such campaigns as attempts to stifle competition and protect an industry struggling to maintain relevance in a changing world.
Moving Beyond the Myths
Raw milk advocates often argue that pasteurization destroys nutrients or that raw milk cures ailments ranging from allergies to digestive issues. However, these claims lack scientific backing. The nutritional difference between raw and pasteurized milk is negligible, and the risks of consuming raw milk far outweigh any perceived benefits.
Similarly, some critics argue that plant-based milk is overly processed or nutritionally inferior. While it is true that some brands add sugars or flavorings, there are plenty of unsweetened, fortified options available. With a variety of choices, consumers can easily select products that align with their health goals.
A Clear Winner
In the debate over milk, plant-based options emerge as the clear winner. They provide a safer, more sustainable, and ethical alternative to raw milk and other animal-derived milks. Recent news stories about raw milk outbreaks and the controversial influence of raw milk advocates on policy only highlight the importance of informed consumer choices.
As awareness continues to grow, the rise of plant-based milk reflects a broader shift toward compassion, sustainability, and health. By choosing plant-based milk, we not only nourish ourselves but also take a step toward a kinder, healthier planet for all.

I am not convinced about the lower carbon footprint of plant based milk.
There must be a large footprint to get almond "milk" to my grocery store. Where is the land for oats and soy expansion? Maybe you have addressed this. If so please direct me to the source. thanks
