A Global Movement, A Radical Idea
Veganuary, the annual challenge encouraging people to try a plant-based lifestyle for the month of January, continues to break records. In 2024, a staggering 1.8 million people worldwide signed up to participate. For 2025, Veganuary is expanding its reach and launching its boldest campaign yet: "Weird."
The Weird Truth About Animal Agriculture
The "Weird" campaign challenges societal norms by exposing the often-overlooked realities of animal agriculture. As Toni Vernelli, Veganuary's international head of policy and communications, puts it, "Most of us see the food we grew up with as 'normal,' but when we stop to ponder the practices behind many familiar foods, they start to look a little bit weird."
Veganuary's provocative advertisements, airing on social media and ITVX, use striking visuals to highlight the uncomfortable truths. One ad shows a pig with a sausage for a body, while another depicts a steak sizzling over a burning forest, emphasizing the environmental impact of meat production. Other ads expose the exploitation of cows for milk and chickens for eggs.
A World Awakening
Many people love animals but continue to consume meat and dairy, often without considering the source. Veganuary aims to bridge this disconnect by confronting people with the realities of animal agriculture. By challenging societal norms and encouraging people to question their food choices, the campaign hopes to inspire lasting change.
In 2025, Veganuary is expanding to countries like Peru, Malaysia, and Canada. This global growth reflects a broader shift towards plant-based diets. Data from 2023 shows a decline in UK meat consumption, indicating a significant change in consumer behavior.
Veganuary's influence extends beyond individuals. Restaurants and food brands are increasingly offering plant-based options, demonstrating the growing mainstream appeal of veganism.
A Lasting Impact
A 2023 follow-up survey revealed that 80% of Veganuary participants reduced their animal product consumption by at least 50%, and 28% went fully plant-based. This highlights the campaign's effectiveness in driving long-term change.
Veganuary's inclusive and approachable ethos invites people to explore veganism without fear of judgment. By providing free resources and support, the campaign empowers individuals to make sustainable choices.
