Navigating Veganism and Activism: Insights from Running a Vegan Facebook Page
My Reflections
Being vegan for several years has been one of the most fulfilling yet challenging journeys of my life. Transitioning from someone who once participated in the normalized consumption of animal products to advocating for the rights of animals has opened my eyes to a world of compassion, ethics, and activism.

Alongside my personal vegan journey, I’ve also managed a Facebook page, The Vegan Project Global, where I interact with fellow vegans, those curious about veganism, and, inevitably, anti-vegan trolls. In addition, I publish The Vegan’s Voice newsletter on Substack, sharing vegan news, information, insights, and reflections. These experiences have shaped not only my worldview but also how I engage with others in the fight for animal rights. Here’s what I’ve learned.
The Emotional Journey of Veganism
Choosing to go vegan was driven by ethical concerns, but I soon realized that it’s not just a diet, it’s a deeply emotional commitment. There’s a profound connection between understanding the pain and suffering inflicted on animals and the desire to live a life that reflects compassion. At times, it can be overwhelming to reconcile this awareness with a world that continues to exploit animals for food, fashion, and entertainment. However, the rewards, both emotional and physical, far outweigh the challenges. Every day is a choice to live in line with my values, and that’s something I cherish.
Learning to Navigate Social Media as a Vegan Activist
When I first began managing The Vegan Project Global Facebook page, I didn’t anticipate the complexities of creating an inclusive yet assertive space for vegan advocacy. Social media has become a powerful tool for spreading the vegan message, but it’s not without its pitfalls. Misinformation, resistance to change, and outright trolling are common. I’ve had to learn how to engage with people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are at different stages of awareness regarding veganism.
My goal has always been to foster an environment that encourages respectful dialogue, but I’ve also realized the importance of being direct when needed. Patience and persistence are key, but so is knowing when to draw boundaries.
The Importance of Compassionate Communication
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a vegan activist is how to communicate compassionately without sounding preachy or condescending. Many people are resistant to change because they feel attacked or judged. I’ve found that offering information in a way that encourages curiosity, rather than defensiveness, is more effective. That said, there are times when assertiveness is necessary—especially when it comes to dispelling myths about veganism or calling out harmful behavior.
For instance, when people make small steps like committing to one vegan day a week, I celebrate that as a win. Progress comes in stages, and I’ve learned to appreciate and encourage even the smallest victories.
Handling Anti-Vegan Trolls and Misinformation
Managing The Vegan Project Global means dealing with trolls and those who are hostile toward veganism. These individuals often try to derail meaningful conversations with inflammatory comments or blatant misinformation. Over time, I’ve developed a thick skin and a repertoire of pointed rebuttals that are firm but educational. Sometimes, trolls come from a place of guilt or cognitive dissonance, and my goal is to challenge their views without sinking to their level.
However, not every battle is worth fighting. There are times when disengaging for the sake of my mental well-being is the better option. Knowing when to step back is just as important as knowing when to speak up.
The Power of Community
One of the most beautiful aspects of managing an online vegan community like The Vegan Project Global is witnessing the power of collective action. The support, encouragement, and shared experiences within the vegan community have been invaluable. It’s a reminder that we are not alone in this movement; many others share the same values of kindness, justice, and respect for all living beings.
Through this community, I’ve also been inspired by others’ stories of perseverance and dedication to the cause. Whether it’s a longtime vegan or someone who’s just starting their journey, we all play a role in advancing the message of compassion.
Reflections on Activism and Change
In the years that I’ve been involved in vegan activism, I’ve seen progress, but it has been slow. Society’s views on veganism are evolving, but it can feel like an uphill battle. The good news is that conversations about veganism are happening more frequently, and people are starting to make the connection between their choices and the impact on animals, the environment, and their health.
Managing The Vegan Project Global has taught me a lot about adapting to the needs of my community. Feedback has been essential, and I’ve learned to pivot based on what resonates with people. Staying resilient in the face of criticism is a must, but so is staying true to the message of veganism.

My experience as a vegan and an activist has been rewarding, challenging, and deeply fulfilling. I quit Facebook a long time ago. Their "engagement algorithm" seemed designed to inflame emotions of fear or anger, sometimes by misinformation or sensationalism. Polarizing, like everything else lately. Although I quit because I thought it was the ethical thing to do, it was also to promote mental hygiene-- probably the main reason. I'm glad you are making a difference there.
