Rewriting the Narrative: Veganism Isn’t the Problem, Apathy Is
Vegans are often labeled as extreme, intolerant, or preachy. These words are meant to dismiss rather than engage. They imply that advocating for animals, the planet, or basic decency is somehow unreasonable. But what if we flipped that lens? What if, instead of seeing vegans as pushy, we saw them as persistent voices in a world that has grown numb to suffering?
The truth is, veganism asks one simple thing: care. Care about what happens to animals behind closed doors. Care about the air, water, and land we all share. Care about the future we’re handing to our children. That’s not extremism. That’s empathy applied to action.
Most vegans didn’t start out radical. They started with questions. Why are we okay with loving dogs but eating pigs? Why do we protect some habitats while bulldozing others for animal feed? Why is it normal to fund cruelty, but controversial to refuse?
These questions don’t come from a place of judgment. They come from awareness. And when you become aware, staying silent feels like betrayal.
So when vegans speak up, it isn’t about superiority. It’s about refusing to look away. It’s about breaking the spell of tradition and convenience. Yes, it can be uncomfortable. Truth often is.
If someone had warned us about climate change decades ago with this same urgency, would we have called them preachy? Or would we wish we had listened?
Veganism isn’t about moral perfection. It’s about minimizing harm and living by the values most people already hold: kindness, fairness, and compassion.
That’s not extreme. What’s extreme is the violence and destruction we’ve normalized just to satisfy our appetites.
So before writing off the message, ask yourself why it makes you uncomfortable. The answer might just be the first step toward change.
One hundred percent true in all of your statements, Michael. Flesh-eating zombies do mind if vegans eat plants and fruits and seeds because this harms them in no way, but Vegans are deeply concerned about non-vegan practices because they are extremely harmful to animals, people and the planet.
Non-vegans need to stop crying just because they are called on to EVOLVE in beneficial ways.
