In a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Elon Musk and Joe Rogan addressed the role of animal agriculture in the climate crisis but made several inaccurate statements that deserve clarification.
‘‘Elon Musk and Joe Rogan’s recent dismissal of animal agriculture’s climate impact ignores established science. Livestock farming is responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane. Reducing meat consumption is essential for climate action, far from the "propaganda" they claim.’’
Musk, who discussed his fondness for a steak-and-eggs breakfast, dismissed the idea that animal farming has a significant environmental impact, claiming that animals “don’t make a difference to global warming.” Rogan echoed this sentiment, calling the link between animal agriculture and climate change "propaganda" and suggesting that only factory farming, not meat consumption as a whole, harms the planet.
The Environmental Impact of Animal Agriculture
The claim that animal agriculture has a minimal effect on climate change is not supported by scientific research. Studies from major environmental organizations, including the United Nations, indicate that livestock farming is responsible for approximately 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, roughly the same as the entire transportation sector. These emissions come from various stages of animal farming, including methane from cattle, manure management, and land use for feed production, which often involves deforestation.
Misconceptions About Regenerative Farming
Rogan praised regenerative farming as “carbon neutral,” implying it would mitigate animal farming’s impact. While regenerative agriculture has potential to reduce carbon in the soil, its scalability to meet global demand is limited. Research shows that even if regenerative practices were widely adopted, they could not offset the emissions from the billions of livestock currently raised for food. Additionally, regenerative farming cannot fully address the methane emissions produced by cattle digestion—a potent greenhouse gas that traps heat 25 times more effectively than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
Methane’s Role in Climate Change
Methane, primarily released by ruminant animals such as cows, contributes significantly to global warming due to its high warming potential. Unlike CO₂, methane has a shorter lifespan in the atmosphere, but its intense warming effect makes it a critical factor in the climate crisis. Addressing methane emissions from livestock would have a notable impact on slowing global warming, especially in the short term.
The Land and Water Use Factor
Raising animals for food is also resource-intensive, demanding vast amounts of land and water. About 80 percent of global agricultural land is dedicated to raising animals and growing their feed, yet animal products provide only a small portion of the global calorie supply. Reallocating this land for crops directly consumed by humans would yield more food while conserving natural resources.
A Dietary Shift as a Climate Solution
Musk and Rogan’s comments sidestepped an essential solution acknowledged by climate experts: reducing meat consumption can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions and lower the environmental strain of food production. Shifting toward a plant-based diet, even partially, would allow for a more sustainable global food system, easing deforestation, conserving water, and reducing methane and CO₂ emissions.
The Real Impact of Reducing Meat Consumption
Contrary to Musk’s assertion that fewer steaks are “irrelevant” to global warming, data from researchers at the University of Oxford suggest that a global shift toward a plant-based diet could reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70 percent by 2050. This reduction would have a measurable impact on atmospheric CO₂ levels and significantly slow the rate of global warming.
Conclusion: Fact-Checking Matters
The claims made by Musk and Rogan on animal agriculture and climate impact are part of a broader narrative that downplays the environmental cost of meat. However, scientific evidence clearly shows that animal farming, especially on an industrial scale, is a significant contributor to climate change. Reducing meat consumption is a viable and impactful step that can help address the climate crisis.

Sure they do. Absolutely. I shudder to think what horrors these two are going to unleash.
Thank you for this important piece, Michael! These men are spreading misinformation that squarely contradicts international scientific consensus on this issue. How incredibly irresponsible.
