Carnism: Why Some Animals Matter and Others Don’t
My Favorite Vegan Memes
Carnism is the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals while caring for others. It shapes how society defines which lives are valuable and which can be used, exploited, and killed. This ideology is rarely questioned because it is normalized, hidden behind traditions, habits, and cultural expectations.
The meme shows a dog and a cat pointing out the absurdity of this system to a cow, pig, and bull. These animals are considered “food,” while the dog and cat are companions. The contrast highlights the inconsistency in moral concern: why should some animals be loved and others ignored? Carnism teaches selective empathy, convincing people that the suffering of certain species is acceptable or invisible.
Understanding carnism is the first step to conscious change. By recognizing that animals are sentient, capable of feeling pain and fear, we begin to see that our daily choices, what we eat, wear, and support, carry ethical consequences. Choosing compassion over convenience can break this cycle.
Every person who questions carnism and chooses plant-based alternatives contributes to a culture where fewer animals suffer, and more are treated with respect. Awareness, education, and ethical action ripple outward, challenging a system built on normalized cruelty. Each choice matters; each choice can shift the balance toward justice and empathy.
Be the one to challenge carnism. Choose compassion today.

Empathy is defined as the ability to put oneself in the shoes of another and experience their suffering as if it was your own. It is a skill valued by Counsellors and Psychotherapists. As a Counselling student you learn how to respond emphatically to what a client is sharing by asking appropriate questions. The aim is to show you are actively listening. In universal law every state has an opposite and the opposite of empathy is apathy, a lack of concern for the condition of another. Animal product consumers are able to show empathy for animals like cats and dogs while disregarding the fate of the animals they eat. The human project with its focus on normalizing the consumption of the flesh of animals that have been killed is able to adopt carnivorous cats and dogs as companion animals because their hunting and killing habits are aligned with an omnivorous mindset. When viewed from a consciousness perspective, this is like trying to have your cake and eat it. By keeping some conscious animals as companions and killing others for food non vegans contradict themselves. Vegans who choose to keep companion animals and feed them meat, also contradict themselves because they are supporting the animal farming industry which vegans are not supposed to do. If we are to be thorough, you cannot be a true vegan if you buy meat for your pet dog or cat.
